Do you know your rights as a student?

At Jeremiah Nyagah Technical Institute, we practise hybrid elections where congressmen and women (selected from the classroom level) are the voters for the student council.

This year’s student council elections were held on 2nd February 2023.

The exercise, organised by the Dean of Students office, began at 9.00am and was concluded at 3.00pm with a student luncheon for the newly elected leaders, their agents as well as the voters.

In hybrid elections, the students in a particular course of study select a congressman or woman, commonly known as the class representative, per level, and the three/ four congressmen/women, depending on whether a course has three/four levels, then make the voters register. This is guided by the Students’ Council constitution which is available in the institute’s library, Dean’s office or in soft copy in the school website.

In the recently concluded elections, the students of Jeremiah Nyagah were represented by 38 congressmen and women who turned up for voting.

Three positions were vacant for the council: Council President, Minister of Education and the Minister of  Non-residents.

Two students were contesting for the post of Council President, three for the post of Minister of Education and two for the post of Minister of Non-residents.

In addition to the election officials, independent observers sat-in during the electioneering process to witness the happenings of the exercise.

Results were announced shortly after 2pm, with Amos Mwangi declared the Council President, Dennis Muthomi declared the Minister of Education and  Jembe Pollo Minister of Non-Residents.
